The Church

Here's my last lesson plan with the pre-school class. I will be teaching Sunday AM, but I'll be using this lesson plan. After that, it's the big kids for me. Tonight's lesson will cover all aspects of the church that we are studying: God's plan, salvation, organization, worship.

My lesson plan is:

Sing: Jesus Loves Me and The B-I-B-L-E with sign language. Also sing My God Is So Big and God Made The Round Round Sun.

Magnetic Puzzle -- Adam and Eve being sent out of the garden or Creation

Sing: God's Wonderful Plan

God's Great Plan Flip Chart -- This is a short flip chart that gives a brief overview of God's plan:

Review the flip chart with the sequence cards in the "God's Wonderful Plan" pocket.

Review God's plan of Salvation using the cards in the salvation pocket. Talk about the pictures on each one. There is a picture of a Bible on the Hearing card, a cross on the believing card, a sad face on the repent card, a man talking on the confess card and a man being baptized on the baptism card.

Pass out Salvation Gloves. Show them how to put their fingers in the right place and where to put the velcro pictures. Discuss what the pictures mean.

Sing: Salvation

Talk about going to church with their family (use wooden church building). Let kids drive their matchbox car up to the building.

Talk about our church family using the pictures in the organization pocket. There are pictures of the elders, deacons, preacher, their teachers and each of their families.

Attendance chart: Our attendance chart this month is a picture of a church building. Each class, the children will get to add a different person to the front of the building. We'll talk about how their family came to the church building to worship God. These pictures came from Palma Smiley's To Toddlers With Love Families books.

Talk about what we do at the church building:
1. Sing -- use a song from the hymnal that they are familiar with like Holy, Holy, Holy (my kids' favorite).
2. Lord's Supper -- Let them taste the unleavened bread while we talk about its significance (I'm still to chicken to bring grape juice).
3. Giving -- Pass the little basket around and let them put coins in while we talk about what we use the money for.
4. Learning About God -- Read a story directly from the Bible and talk about what the preacher does.
5. Pray -- say a prayer making sure each child has a turn that wants one.

Review all of these using the cards in the worship pocket.

Talk about manners during worship using large cards in classroom.
As time allows, sing songs of the children's choosing and end class with a prayer.

I'm Moving On Up

Sorry, I haven't posted new lesson plans in the last week or 2. I've been sick and haven't been able to teach. The substitutes have been using the most recent lesson plan and doing whatever activities they prefer to do. Thank you, Dawn and Jill. I won't be teaching class in the morning either. I apparently passed on whatever I had to to my 2 youngest boys. I'll be staying home with them.

In other news -- I am being promoted. Okay, it's not a better class, just a different one. As of January, I'll be teaching the upper elementary class. We will be studying the New Testament. My plan is to teach them for the entire year on both Sunday and Wednesday. We will be doing a lot of memory work. Our class room will be set up in stations that they can move around to as they want or need to. Each station is designed to help them understand and memorize a particular list or passage. One of the stations will help them review each week's lesson.

I've taught the New Testament this way in the past. It is a nice change of pace from the regular class routine. I'm looking forward to it.

I probably won't have the need for regular lesson plans like I had with the pre-schoolers. Most of the time in class on Wed will be in the stations. Sunday, we'll be learning the lesson and hopefully have a little time to spend at the stations. Each class session, we'll spend a little time concentrating on some of the memory work.

This age is wonderful to stress the memory work. They are so eager to learn and their minds just absorb anything you'll make available. Hopefully, the seed of will be planted deep and firmly so we'll have strong Christians as they mature.

The Church -- God's Plan of Salvation

This lesson will be pretty much identical to Sunday AM, except I've added a Salvation Glove to the list of activities. There's a picture of this on my VBS lesson plans, except that instead of words being used (hear, believe, repent, confess, be baptized), I've put pictures that hopefully will help them represent the words. There is an ear for hear, a cross for believe, a heart for repent, a talking smiley face for confess and a drop of water for baptism. The pictures are attached to the glove with velcro. This will give the children a more interactive experience.

My lesson plan is:

Sing: Jesus Loves Me and The B-I-B-L-E with sign language. Also sing My God Is So Big and God Made The Round Round Sun.

Magnetic Puzzle -- Adam and Eve being sent out of the garden

Sing: God's Wonderful Plan

God's Great Plan Flip Chart -- This is a short flip chart that gives a brief overview of God's plan:

Worshiping God. The children were able to try the unleavened bread we use during the Lord's supper. They weren't too impressed. They may not even want to try again today. Let the children "give" coins. I'll be using a basket we use during Sun AM services. I hope I remember to put it back after class.

The Church -- God's Plan of Salvation

This morning and Wed PM we will be talking about the Plan of salvation. The children are already somwhat familiar with the lesson because our VBS was based on it this year. We've also been talking about some conversions while we studied Peter and Paul.

My lesson plan is:

Sing: Jesus Loves Me and the The B-I-B-L-E with sign language. Also sing My God Is So Big and God Made The Round Round Sun.

Magnetic Puzzle -- Heaven

Sing: God's Wonderful Plan

God's Great Plan Flip Chart -- This is a short flip chart that gives a brief overview of God's plan:

Sing: Salvation

During our VBS, one of the men here built a really nice wooden church building. We'll be using it this month. Each child will have a small car that they can drive up to the church building. We'll talk about going to worship God with our families and all it takes to get ready.

The Church -- God's Great Plan

We begin our lessons on the church this week. We will have 8 class sessions. Each week is going to be basically the same lesson. I will be adding to it as I find time. I've got it all planned in my head and on paper, but haven't had time to implement everything yet.

The general plan for the month is the following:

God's Great Plan
God's Plan of Salvation
The Organization of the Church
The Work of the Church

Instead of a popup book to send home, we will be working on a pocket book. This format just seemed to fit the need better than the other. There will be a pocket for each of the above topics. Each pocket will have cards with pictures to help them visualize/remember what we learned.

My lesson plan is:

Sing: Jesus Loves Me and the The B-I-B-L-E with sign language. Also sing My God Is So Big and God Made The Round Round Sun.

Magnetic Puzzle -- Heaven. I haven't mentioned this in a while, but all of the pictures for the magnetic puzzles have come from the Beginner's Bible Cards published by Scholastic. If you don't have these cards, I recommend the highly. They send you 2 or 3 packets every few weeks, so it takes a while to accumulate them all. I don't think I have a complete set, but I have enough to do some really neat things.

Sing: Salvation -- We used this song in VBS. We'll sing it this month because it teaches about how to be saved.

God's Great Plan Flip Chart -- This is a short flip chart that gives a brief overview of God's plan:

God created the World (He had a plan from the beginning)
God made Adam and Eve
Adam and Eve sinned -- bringing sin into the world
God punished Adam and Eve
God sent Jesus to save us all
Jesus died, was buried and was resurrected
Jesus ascended into Heaven
Jesus is in Heaven preparing a place for us
We can go live with Him in Heaven if we do His will

I used the Beginner's Bible Cards published by Scholastic for the flip chart as well.

The first pocket page for our new book is about God's Great plan. The children will have 5 picture cards representing what we discussed in the flip chart. The pictures on the cards are:

Adam and Eve in the garden
Adam and Eve being banished from the garden
Jesus as an adult
Jesus ascending
Heaven

They will get to try to put them in order and then put them back in the pocket. They'll get to do this every class for a total of 8 times.

Attendance chart: I'm still working on this, but it is supposed to be a church building. Each class children will add a person to the outside.

During our VBS, one of the men here built a really nice wooden church building. We'll be using it this month. Each child will have a small car that they can drive up to the church building. We'll talk about going to worship God with our families and all it takes to get ready.

Worshiping God. We'll spend time praying and singing. We'll read from the Bible. We'll let them taste the communion bread. We'll let them put money in a basket. As we do each of these things, we'll talk about its significance and some good manners while doing them.

End class with a prayer. Let each child that wants to say a prayer
