Peter and Cornelius

Today is our last lesson on Peter. We will be talking about Peter's vision and Cornelius' conversion. I remember this story so well from my childhood. It was one of my favorite.

The pop-up book is complete and ready for the kids to take home. The attendance charts will go home as well. I will try to get my son to make another slide show of the pop-up book this week. He did a great job on the last one. If you haven't seen it you can be clicking here.

My lesson plan is:


Sing: Jesus Loves Me and The B-I-B-L-E with sign language. Also sing My God Is So Big. My 3 year old was "helping" me in the resource room this evening. He found a big cloth sun and cloud. He wanted me to sing a song about it. It made me remember a song I used to sing all the time in class -- God Made The Round Round Sun. We'll give it a try in class today.

Thoughts On Last Night's Class

Sometimes, less is best. I didn't have much of a lesson plan last night. It was quite skimpy. My printer wasn't working (my brain wasn't either), so I didn't get a new popup page for the kids.

When we got to class, there was a distinct odor in the building. There had been some sort of backup in the restroom (right behind my classroom). It was pretty strong. We went ahead with class as usual, but the smell was always there.

We went through my lesson plan and had about 20 minutes of class left. A couple of posts back I mentioned that I had cleaned the room up. I found some wonderful activities that previous teachers had made. I put them where I could get to them if I ever ran out of things to do.

We read through the flip chart "Who's Living At Your House". The kids loved it. If you aren't familiar with it, it is about GREEDY GREEN, POUTY PINK, TAN TATTLER, and others with bad character traits. After reading about each one it says, "I hope he's not living at your house". At the end, there is CHRIS CHRISTIAN. It describes all of his good characteristics and then says, "I hope there are lots of Chris Christians living at your house". It is really cute.

I passed out the little Bibles and we did the songs from the baby class: This is Way We Pat the Bible, and This Is The Bible God's Written Word. They loved them. I sometimes forget that just because I think of them as baby songs doesn't mean the kids do.

Last of all, I read the Patti Book, Sh=h-h-h. I was really surprised with the great response. They loved it. I remember loving that book when I was little. My 3 year old begged to take it home. If anyone knows if that has gone back in print, please let me know about it. I would love to buy a few more.

I said all of this to say, sometimes much planning is good, but sometimes it is the spontaneous activities that make for a great Bible class.

Peter Is Arrested

Okay, somewhere along the line I lost a week. I thought I had more class sessions this month. I guess the meeting through me off. I was going to teach about miracles that Peter did tonight, but since I just have tonight and Sunday to teach Peter, I'm going to teach about Peter being arrested.

Peter was arrested 3 times. We will be talking specifically about when he was arrested in Acts 12. I don't know how many of you have memorized what's in the each chapter of Acts, but Danny did growing up. He learned that in chapter 12 -- 10 + 2 Rhoda goes cuckoo. I was reading this chapter to my boys the other day. My 13 year old remembered that little rhyme. When we read the passage, he realized that Rhoda didn't go as cuckoo as his mind had lead him to believe. He remembers a picture of Rhoda (that his dad drew) where she was in a straight jacket. Well, that obviously was an exaggeration trying to help the kids remember what was in that chapter. Rhoda didn't go cuckoo, she was just very surprised.

That has nothing to do with my lesson, but it was on my mind, and you got to hear it. :-)

Peter Teaches About Jesus

Today's lesson is about the apostles receiving the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost. The apostles were able to speak different languages. They were able to teach the people in Jerusalem (and there were people from all over), each one in his own language. They taught the people about Jesus and that He was the messiah, the savior. They told the people to repent and be baptized. That day, there were 3000 baptized. God added them to His church.

This is definitely a turning point in the Bible. Before this day, the Jews lived under the law of Moses. Now they would be living under the new law. The law of Christ. Not only the Jews, but eventually, all men would have the opportunity to obey Christ and be saved to live eternally.

Peter Flip Chart -- The flip chart is now 29 pages long. Although, going through the miracles of Jesus goes pretty quickly.

Pop up book -- To reenforce the fascinating part of this story, where the tongues of fire appear on the apostles heads, we have a popup book that has a sliding paper. When the slide is pulled out one end, you see the tongues of fire, then, when it pulled back out the other, the tongues of fire disappear. I know, that made no sense. I'll get a picture of it when we're through with this month.

Peter Denies Jesus

Tomorrow we will learn about Peter denying Jesus. I used to love this story as a child. I think it was because it had a rooster in it. I thought that the rooster crowed 3 times. Funny the things we pick up as children. Now, this story makes me sad. Peter thought he was strong. He thought he would always stand behind Jesus. When the going got tough, he didn't do too well.

Tomorrow our gospel meeting starts. We are having a lectureship with men from the area and a little beyond. Peter Flip Chart -- We'll read the entire flip chart up to Peter denying Jesus. I may take a couple of the miracles out of the flip chart. It is getting rather long. I want to read it every week, but I don't want the kids to have to sit still too long.

Pop up book -- Our pop up page is actually a little book glued into the big book. On each page of the little book is a picture of Peter denying Jesus. Each time he denies Jesus, he gets more and more upset. The last page is of Peter being very sad. There's also a picture of a rooster crowing. The children will get to stick a 1, 2 or 3 sticker on the appropriate page corresponding to Peter's denial.

Peter See Jesus' Miracles

Our lesson tonight is about the miracles that Peter witnessed Jesus doing. That may seem like a rather odd lesson to teach, but, it stresses the fact that Peter was with Jesus while He was here. The last few lessons of the month we'll talk about how Peter taught people about Jesus after He ascended to Heaven.

We will be going over miracles that the children are already familiar with since we studied Jesus' miracles last month. So, I'm going to raid the "miracles of Jesus" box and use some of the activities we had last month. The only miracle that will be new to them is when Jesus raised the widow's son.

Peter Walks on the Water

Our lesson tomorrow is Peter walking on the water. Last month, when we were talking about the miracles of Jesus, we learned that Jesus walked on the water. I left out the part about Peter so that we could study it this month. This is a great lesson on faith. I'll be singing one of Glenda Schales songs (Peter Walks On The Water -- I think that's the name). This is a new one she wrote this year, I believe. It is a really good one. Try to get your hands on it if you can.

Magnetic Puzzle -- Peter -- We'll be using this same puzzle for most of the month (maybe all of it). The past 2 months we've had a different puzzle every lesson. These younger kids were having trouble doing them. I think just using one will help them be able to work it easier. I make the puzzles in 4 pieces, 6 pieces and 8 pieces. Throughout the month, they will probably be able to move to a harder puzzle.

Attendance chart: We finally have an attendance chart ready. It is a picture of Peter and Andrew fishing in their boat. There is netting glued to the side to be a net. Each class, the kids will get to glue a fish to their net. This should reinforce the first lesson about Peter and Andrew being called by Jesus.

Spring Cleaning?

Tonight, we won't have our regular Bible class. Instead, we will all meet in the auditorium and sing praises to God. I really like these singing nights. Not only because the music (from the hearts of Christians) is so beautiful and uplifting, but also because I get a much needed break from teaching.

This afternoon, I spent 3 hours in my classroom straightening up. It wasn't horrible, it just hadn't been done in a while. In fact, I've been teaching there for a year, and I've never given it a good cleaning. It looks much better. The neat things people have made over the years for use in this class are displayed on the bookshelf. Before, the bookshelf had books and supplies like scissors, glue, crayons etc. While these are necessary, we didn't need near as much as we had and we definitely didn't need it in plain view.

Right now, in the middle of the floor, is a huge pile of stuff that needs to go to the resource room. I'll have to get my kids to help me carry it over there tonight. After that's done, we'll be in good shape.

If you haven't cleaned your classroom in a while, I recommend it. It will not only make it look nicer, it will make you more enthused. It might also remind you of some great resources you may have forgotten you had.

Peter -- Jesus Calls Peter

This month we are talking about Peter. We will talk about Peter and Jesus and then we will talk about what Peter did after Jesus died. Our lesson today is about Peter and Andrew fishing and Jesus calling them to follow Him.

I will have a new student tomorrow (if she is willing to come in). She is nearly 3 and is moving up to my class. There is one more little boy that may move up also. He just turned 2 and is a little young, but we need the teacher in his class for another class. There should also be a 3 year old visitor tomorrow. I hope I've made enough pop up pages.

Last month we worked on a pop up book about the Miracles of Jesus. I have posted a slide show of it on my website. I tried to post it here, but apparently I can't post any java script. If you'd like to see it, it is temporarily here: Miracles of Jesus Pop up Book

Attendance chart: I didn't have time to do an attendance chart yet. Hopefully we'll have one next week.
